Ponies, the countryside, and crazy nights we don't remember
It's been a while since I had been out of the country, but this trip to England with some of my best friends from school, was well worth the wait. A few of us from the Penn State Equestrian Team went to Newcastle to visit Michelle, who has been studying for her Master's Degree. This was the best trip I have taken in a very long time.
After a long plane ride from JFK to Iceland, yes Iceland, (where there were no puffins) we finally arrived in England! Day 1 consisted of dinner and sleeping. Day 2, we were up and running as we headed to Alnwick Castle, where Harry Potter was filmed. The castle itself is ornate and the architecture that is still standing is remarkable. Add that to the flowing countryside, beautiful gardens and treehouse? and it is fit for a king. In the treehouse that is on the grounds, we found the perfect spot for Bethany's wedding, or what we then aptly dubbed her, 'the one we left at home.'
After an unusually sunny day in England, it was time for a night out, Newcastle style. It is unbeleivable the people we saw out, more so what they were 'not' wearing. Teens and older women. But we did show them how to party Penn State style, keeping up with all the craziness. The six of us, all back together again, were a bit much for all of Michell's friends to handle, yelling PSU cheers and running through the streets.
While we recovered from our night out, the group took a day trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, where we took a bus tour to see the city. It was exactly the mini break we needed, as we were able to see the city and tour the castle.
Sunday, was the perfect day. The sun was out and everyone was re-energized. After a tour of Newscastle, it was off to Southshields for a horseback ride along the coast. It was the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. We could see the North Sea and the fields were bright green. The trainers let us canter through the fields and it was like right out of book. The icing on the cake to a perfect vacation.
For our last day, short yes, we made our way back to London. Instead of a bus or walking tour, we took a bike tour of the city. Riding through the back streets and seeing some of the different sights along with the major ones, was very cool. Even though, I had lived there, it was nice to see the city I love from a different perspective of my friends. We had dinner at the best Mexican restaurant in Notting Hill, right where I lived. Free margaritas anyone? :) Then we spent our last night at The Cellar, an underground cocktail bar, where there was a drag show. It was the funniest thing and we had a blast. Cookie MonStar was fantastic and made a prefect ending to the trip.
Unfortunately, the trip came a close way too fast, but we are already planning next year's. Greece anyone? Look on facebook for more pictures!!
