A Trip to Colder Climates
Never have I been more excited to get away and take a break from life.
Last week/weekend, Joe and I went on our first vacation together and the first for both of us for the year. It was a much-needed getaway as we both left our laptops at home and just left everything in Florida as we jetted off to Colorado.
In addition to a mini-vacation, the main reason for the trip was that Joe's fraternity brother was getting married. So Thursday, we both took half-days and drove to Tampa to spend the night with another one of his brothers, who also went with us to Colorado. Five a.m. came super early on Friday and we were off!
Landing in Denver, all of us (four of us at this point) were exhausted, but there was no time for sleep! As soon as we gathered our bags it was off to grab a few few friends and head into the mountains, (with a few stops along the way to gather supplies for the weekend.)
The wedding took place in Breckenridge, a small ski-town about a hour-and-a-half outside of Denver, way up in the mountains. People talk about altitude sickness, but you have no idea until you are up that high and experiencing it first-hand. Thankfully, I didn't get sick until Saturday night and Joe didn't get sick until after we got home.
Friday was mostly spent exploring Breckenridge as well as our amazing hotel. I knew that we were all going to be staying in a suite together, but was not expecting the gorgeous rooms that we ended up with. When we finally checked in, we walked into a huge kitchen/living room with a balcony that had a view of the mountains. :) There were two floors, with two master suites on the top floor, a spiral staircase leading back to the bottom floor across the hall, which led to two more rooms with double beds. While there were six of us, the room could have held 8-10. It was gorgeous and all the rooms had views of the mountains. I never wanted to leave. Once we all settled in, we just spent the afternoon hanging out and me getting to know all of them, Joe's friends are so nice and I felt so comfortable with them, just like if I was with my girls from school.
I ended up going to the wedding rehearsal and dinner with Joe, and after we met up with everyone at a bar and then just came back and relaxed in the room.
Saturday was another day exploring "Breck" as the locals say. We started off with Brunch at a small restaurant called the Columbine, which was known for the 'Best Brunch in Breckenridge.' It definitely had an amazing brunch. I think we were all stuffed and not looking for food in the near future. Next, it was onto a little more exploring of the town and then hanging out at the room while we all got ready for Jason and Liz's wedding. *Thankfully at this point in the weekend, I had met both of them.
The wedding ceremony itself was the shortest one I have ever been to. When I say short, I mean over within the blink of an eye, get the basics in and done. 8 minutes and 51 seconds. One of the guys was timing it. It was very nice though and had the mountains in the backdrop. Joe had to walk one of the dogs down the aisle, so that called for some amusement.
Then we were off to the reception! I spent the cocktail hour with Joe's friends, as he was still taking photos with the bridal party, but it was an open bar, and we were having a good time. The party was fun and the venue was very nice. Even though I had just met the bride and groom, and recently met Joe's friends, I had a great time and was happy to be there and invited.
For our last day in Breckenridge, we woke up to a winter wonderland, as it had snowed overnight. I don't mean a dusting, but snowed enough that the roads and the tunnel out of the mountain were closed. That being said, the group of us was off to another brunch to enjoy our last day of vacation. After we ate and packed up the cars, it was out of the mountains and back into Denver. Since we had the red-eye flight back to Tampa, we were able to spend the afternoon and night in Denver and explore the city a bit. Maral lives there while going to school so she was our tour guide for the night. It was the perfect way to end vacation.
The vacation was a welcomed relief but now, it is back to reality as work came back with a vengeance. Full-force back into work mode and class for the next few weeks.
