Yikes! The Polo Ponies Are Coming!
Since taking my first polo lesson about a month ago, I’ve been
debating whether or not I could turn my hunter, Dixie, into a polo pony.
She is the perfect jumper and is the epitome of a hunter with her
tucked knees over the jumps and her quiet demeanor. She likes to go out
and gallop around the polo fields and is smaller than the ponies I
lessoned on, so I thought maybe, just maybe, she could hack it as a polo
pony.
I should have known that my dreams of Dixie becoming my next dip into the polo arena would be shattered. She doesn’t even like having her face washed and backs up when she sees a sponge inching towards her ears. So, there’s no way a polo mallet was going to be swinging anywhere near that pretty little head of hers.

However, I still held out hope, telling anyone that I had my own little polo pony back at the barn. But all those expectations are completely gone after Dixie has decided that polo ponies are monsters.
She and I were taking a walk to our lesson, as we do every week and things were going just fine. Until we saw the polo ponies. Up in the distance, I couldn’t tell if it was just multiple people riding, or someone with multiple polo ponies. Dixie figured it out before I did.
First came the dead stop and the snorting. Then, after a pause so she could think about her options, we continued on our way. As the ponies came closer and got bigger, the more like monsters they seemed. Dixie decided in an instant that they were going to eat her and immediately spun around on a dime, bucking and heading towards home. When I was finally able to get her to stop bouncing up and down, I quickly hopped off and explained that the ponies were not going to attack.

With some persuasion, and noticing that they had headed back in the opposite direction, Dixie and I slowly made our way to our lesson. There was lots of snorting and Dixie was definitely on the lookout, but we finally made it to our destination.
I think I have learned that not only do I own a very ‘special’ mare, but she is most definitely a hunter. Dixie will never be a polo pony, even though her size may say differently. When out walking the trails and the polo ponies are coming our way, we will be sure to head the opposite direction.
You never know, they may be monsters in disguise.
